Turning Sleeping into Art by Elison

The Elison story should start with a fulfilled desire to play the saxophone at school, but instead starts with a short-lived stint as the chief and only bassoon player in the Worcestershire school's orchestra. This led to a lengthy hiatus from music until school was left behind once and for all, although the faintly happy memories of a few lead singing parts in disappointing school shows had a career as a bed and bath crooner almost all but guaranteed.

The necessary four guitar chords were learnt and the singing began. The lack of any real talent at this point meant it should have remained a private past time, but the surprising volume put out by this once bass blowing chest caught the attention of a few distant neighbours and their anger suggested at least one thing. The voice was strong!

Turning Sleeping into Art puts that voice to good use, with beautiful, intimate vocals throughout, drawing you into the comically honest lyrics dealing with topics as wide ranging as bringing up children and how to survive having a child. The British recording artist takes on the complete writing and recording process to present artistic musical works entirely of his own style.

Released on the 22nd of September 2023

Turning Sleeping into Art takes an honest look at the realities of bringing up children. Having had his first child in 2020, Elison is as aware as any new parent of the challenges, but for a mind that is used to thinking everything through, always hunting for songs, it can be end up being too hard to cope.

Writers tend to deal with things using words and Elison was no different, but the realities of the time and noise effects of writing and recording an album go very much against the natural flow of looking after a newborn. The effect on life is true for any new parent and the pressures it puts on your relationship are dramatic, so this album looks at how one man managed to cope and how the making of this very album was the big part in how he in fact managed to survive.

Musicians can't afford therapy and so the music becomes the therapy, put out there for all to hear and take influence from. The making of this album has in no small part been the hardest and best thing that has happened to Elison and parallels very similar feelings when bringing a child into the world. That is in an even grander way, both the very best and very worst thing a person can experience, both happening at the same time from the same source. If you have been through it you will understand and this album will let you know you are not alone. If not, this album should give you a taste.
